Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Michael-John Wolfe and chances are, you’ve probably never heard of me. I am an actor, make that a working actor. I have been living in Los Angeles for three years now and in the past three years, I have had supporting roles opposite Tom Cruise (Collateral) and Brad Pitt (Mr. and Mrs. Smith). You can find my name in the credits of both of these films. Aside from the credits I received, I am currently receiving nice residuals from both films. I currently have two National Commercials running and I make my living on paying acting jobs alone. I grossed $84,939 in acting earnings this past year (2006). Am I famous? No. Am I a star? No. Regardless of fame and stature, I work on a film, television or commercial set on a weekly basis and I am able to make a very comfortable living on acting jobs alone. You might be asking, “why is this such a big deal?”. It's a "big deal" because most actors who move to Los Angeles with dreams of stardom usually wind up bartending or waiting tables until three in the morning to pay their rent. They wind up doing this all while moving farther and farther from their initial goal of becoming a working actor. I don’t know about you, but I moved here to work on a set and be in front of a camera. If you want to learn how to make a living as a working actor, then this book is for you. I will walk you through each “secret” that I learned to obtain work. We will discuss everything from non-union background work to major guest starring roles. If you are looking for info on how to become a famous actor, then I have no answer for you. However I will say that my goal is to become a series regular on prime time television within the next few years, so hopefully I’ll have the answer to that question for you in my second book, “How to become a famous actor.” As you know, there are an abundance of books out there that claim they have the best information on becoming a working actor in LA, but only a small percentage of the actors who write these books actually have the credits on their resume to back up their information. Not only do I have the credits, but I make my day to day living as a working actor. Before we start, I wanted to let you know that I will be mentioning certain companies and websites throughout this book. These are merely companies and websites that have worked for me personally, I have no affiliation with any company in this book and I will leave it at your discretion to decide if any of my advice is right for you. Also, you may have noticed already that I have put personal, but industry educated, opinions into this piece of work. I am a professional actor and I know that my opinions are worthy of passing along to you on your quest of becoming a professional actor. I will warn you however, that I “tell it like it is” and some of my comments and opinions may offend certain people in the industry who maintain their old school thinking. If you see any industry related corrections that need to be made in this book or you have any questions or comments feel free to email me directly at howtomakealivinginla@yahoo.com . I can’t promise that I will answer every email, but I will do my best! In the back of this book you will find some invaluable resources including a list of SAG franchised agents, casting director workshops, background casting companies, websites that I consistently use and much more. So, now that the stage has been set, let us begin our journey towards making a living as a working actor in Los Angeles… Michael-John Wolfe
